Present Simple

Structure: Subject + base form of the verb.

eg. I like tennis.

All verbs in Present simple are conjugated in the same way as in the table above. The only

exception is the verb “to be” and “to have”. Verbs “to be” and “to have” are irregular verbs

which change their forms according to grammatical person and number when conjugated.

Spelling

• Most verbs add-s in the third person singular.

wear – wears

speak – speaks

live – lives

• Verbs such as do and go take – es in the end.

go – goes

do – does

• Verbs ending in -s,-sh, x or -ch add-es.

finish – finishes

kiss – kisses

fox- foxes

teach – teaches

• Verbs ending in a consonant and – y, we drop the –y and changed it to – ies.

fly – flies

study- studies

• But if the verbs ends with a vowel and – y, the – y doesn’t change and we add – s.

play – plays

• Have is irregular

have – has
